Agni ↔ Metabolic Enzyme Systems

Ayurveda's thirteen-fold Agni classification and four functional states compared to the tiered, enzyme-driven organisation of digestion and metabolism in modern biochemistry.

IN PLAIN LANGUAGE

Ayurveda describes digestion and metabolism through Agni, a thirteen-part 'fire' with four working states; modern biochemistry describes the same territory as tiered enzyme systems and metabolic rate.

Ayurveda offers a practical, whole-person framework for supporting digestion day to day; modern biochemistry offers precise lab tests to diagnose specific metabolic or hormonal problems when symptoms persist.

WHEN TO SEEK CARE

See a doctor for persistent severe loss of appetite, unexplained rapid weight change, or digestive symptoms that don't improve with dietary adjustment — these can signal a treatable metabolic or endocrine condition.

🔴 REFER IMMEDIATELY

  • Rapid unintentional weight loss with hyperphagia (possible hypermetabolic/endocrine pathology such as thyrotoxicosis) should not be attributed simply to Teekshnagni
  • Persistent severe anorexia or inability to digest food (possible serious GI or systemic pathology) should not be attributed simply to Mandagni
  • Symptoms attributed to Agni imbalance that persist beyond a reasonable trial of dietary/Agni-directed management should be referred for biochemical or endocrine workup
  • Suspected hyper- or hypometabolic states should be confirmed with standard laboratory testing (thyroid panel, glucose) rather than managed on clinical impression of Agni state alone

Never do this

Do not treat Ama as a specific, measurable toxin, and do not substitute Agni-based reasoning for biochemical diagnosis of a suspected metabolic or endocrine disorder.

🟢 SUITABLE FOR ROUTINE / COLLABORATIVE CARE

AYURVEDA SCOPE

Assessing and supporting digestive capacity through diet, routine and lifestyle measures for functional digestive complaints without red-flag features.

MODERN MEDICINE SCOPE

Diagnosing and treating specific enzyme deficiencies and endocrine causes of altered metabolic rate, and quantifying metabolism directly.

COLLABORATIVE SCOPE

Using Agni assessment to guide dietary and lifestyle support alongside standard biochemical workup and treatment of underlying metabolic or endocrine disease.
