Over two thousand years ago, Sushruta argued that a physician who has only read about the body and never examined one directly is dangerously incomplete, and he devised the first documented protocol for opening a human body to study it. His method — soaking a body in a river for seven days before scraping away its layers — could show the general shape and position of organs, bones, and vessels very well, but it could not show fine detail like individual nerves.
