Kantha-Shaluka is the classical name this course uses for tonsillitis, inflamed tonsils from a viral or bacterial infection. Vrinda and Eka-vrinda describe the throat-side picture of enlarged adenoids, which, together with enlarged tonsils, can contribute to snoring, mouth breathing, and disrupted sleep in children.

Modern medicine offers a practical bedside tool (the Centor criteria) to judge how likely a sore throat is to be bacterial, recognises glandular fever as a specific mimic with its own antibiotic pitfall, and can assess and treat adenotonsillar hypertrophy surgically when it is causing sleep-disordered breathing. Classical Ayurveda's contribution recognised here is naming and describing tonsillar and adenoid disease as distinct entities; it does not offer an equivalent probability-based decision tool or the specific mononucleosis-antibiotic warning.

WHEN TO SEEK CARE

A sore throat with fever that persists, marked fatigue with swollen glands (raising the possibility of glandular fever), tonsillitis that keeps recurring, or a child who snores loudly, mouth-breathes, or is witnessed to pause or gasp during sleep, all warrant medical assessment rather than repeated home treatment alone.

Never do this

Do not give or recommend amoxicillin- or ampicillin-class antibiotics for a sore throat with posterior cervical lymphadenopathy, splenomegaly, or marked disproportionate fatigue without first considering infectious mononucleosis -- this specific combination characteristically produces a florid rash. Do not treat recurrent tonsillitis or a child's snoring and witnessed sleep pauses as a purely local throat matter without considering adenotonsillar hypertrophy and possible obstructive sleep apnoea.
