Preventive Geriatrics ↔ Public-Health Care of the Elderly

Preventive, functional geriatric-health principles — delirium recognition, protein and exercise needs, and function over normal numbers — correcting common assumptions about ageing, distinct from clinical management of age-related disease.

IN PLAIN LANGUAGE

Sudden confusion in an older person is never just 'old age' — it usually has a findable, treatable cause and needs prompt attention. And older adults generally need more protein and more exercise, not less, to stay strong and independent.

Ayurveda offers a holistic framework for supportive, rejuvenative care in old age; modern geriatrics offers evidence-based correction of harmful assumptions about diet and exercise, and a safety-critical protocol for recognising delirium.

WHEN TO SEEK CARE

Seek urgent care for any sudden new confusion, a fall, or a rapid decline in an elderly person's ability to manage daily activities.

🔴 REFER IMMEDIATELY

  • New, sudden confusion or altered consciousness in an elderly patient
  • Signs of dehydration, infection, or medication toxicity in an elderly patient
  • Unintentional weight loss or evident muscle wasting
  • Any new-onset confusion in an elderly patient, which must be worked up as delirium until proven otherwise
  • Falls with suspected fracture or head injury
  • Signs of severe malnutrition or sarcopenia impairing function

Never do this

Do not attribute new, sudden confusion in an elderly patient to normal ageing or doshic imbalance without first excluding a treatable acute cause; do not restrict protein intake in an elderly patient based on the traditional light-food assumption without individual assessment.

🟢 SUITABLE FOR ROUTINE / COLLABORATIVE CARE

AYURVEDA SCOPE

Rejuvenative and lifestyle counselling for healthy ageing, including diet, daily routine and gentle activity, once acute causes of decline have been excluded.

MODERN MEDICINE SCOPE

Diagnostic work-up of delirium and acute confusion, and structured resistance-exercise and nutrition prescription for frailty and sarcopenia.

COLLABORATIVE SCOPE

Combining rasayana-style supportive care with modern protein-repletion and resistance-exercise prescriptions, while ensuring any acute change in mental status is promptly worked up as possible delirium.
