Classical Ayurveda's eight 'maharasas' are named mineral substances -- including mica (abhraka), a copper-iron mineral (makshika), the rock exudate shilajatu, and the zinc ore that becomes yashada bhasma. Modern biochemistry independently confirms that zinc and iron/copper genuinely matter for blood sugar and blood-cell health, which is exactly where the classical texts pointed. But for several of the eight, nobody today is fully certain which modern mineral the classical name actually refers to, which matters because what is sold under an old name may not be what the name once meant.

Modern biochemistry can identify exactly what a mineral does at the cellular level and measure it in blood or urine; classical Rasashastra spent centuries learning, through processing, taste, smell and behaviour under heat, which minerals to use and for what. Getting the benefit of both means choosing a manufacturer who tests and discloses composition rather than relying on the classical name alone.
