Do not assume a patient presenting with night blindness has simple, reversible vitamin A deficiency without checking family history, progression pattern, and fundus appearance -- retinitis pigmentosa and congenital stationary night blindness can present identically at first complaint but carry different management and prognosis, and mistaking a progressive genetic disease for a nutritional deficiency delays appropriate genetic counselling and low-vision planning. Do not present classical Rasayana/Tarpana measures as capable of reversing established genetic photoreceptor degeneration.
