Vandhyatva ↔ Infertility Workup

The classical four-factor model (ritu, kshetra, ambu, beeja) is a complete causal decomposition of conception that explicitly includes the male partner, closely paralleling the modern infertility workup, though it cannot itself instrumentally diagnose which factor has failed or why.

IN PLAIN LANGUAGE

The classical texts said conception needs four things: right timing (ritu), a healthy passage (kshetra), nourishment to sustain the pregnancy (ambu), and healthy gametes from both partners (beeja). These are essentially the same four questions a modern infertility work-up asks, and importantly the old texts always included the man's role.

Ayurveda offers a genuinely accurate conceptual framework, supportive nutritional and vajikarana measures, and honesty about the limits of treatment; modern medicine provides the actual diagnostic tools (semen analysis, hormone tests, imaging, laparoscopy) and specific treatments (ovulation induction, tubal surgery, IVF/ICSI) that identify and address the failed factor.

WHEN TO SEEK CARE

A couple who have not conceived after twelve months of regular unprotected intercourse (six months if the woman is over 35 or a known cause exists) should have both partners assessed together, starting with a semen analysis.

Known or suspected bilateral tubal block, azoospermia from testicular failure, or premature ovarian insufficiency

Never do this

Do not promise that vajikarana or classical treatment can reverse bilateral tubal blockage, azoospermia from primary testicular failure, or premature ovarian insufficiency — these require honest counselling about limits, not prolonged unproven treatment that costs a couple their remaining fertile years.
